Anna Marie Bengtson Miller was born July 8, 1920 in the Canby, MN area to Nels and Anna Bengtson. She was baptized and confirmed at the Dawson Covenant Church. She graduated from Canby, Minnesota High School in 1938.
Ann enrolled in a 2 year Nurses Training course at the Dawson Hospital and graduated in 1940. For the next several years she worked at the Dawson, Canby, and Clarkfield hospitals. She next worked at the Veterans Hospital in Cheyenne while her fiancée, Loyd, was at college in Seattle.
She was united in Marriage to Ensign Loyd Miller at the Naval Academy Air Base chapel in Jacksonville, Florida August 27, 1944. They remained there until January 1945 when Loyd was transferred to a naval carrier in the Pacific Ocean for the remainder of WWII. During that time Ann worked at the Veterans Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In 1946 they moved to Madison, MN where Loyd worked for Wigan Chevrolet. In 1950 they became owners of Madison Farm Service which sold and serviced Case and New Holland farm equipment. Loyd and Ann had 8 children, Sandra Skallerud, Fargo, Jerry (Phyllis) Miller, Prior Lake, Janet Barnes, Burnsville, Ron (Lisa) Miller, Burnsville, Alan (Margi) Miller, Becker, Mary (Tom) Peterson, Eagan, Dawn (Tim) Peterson, Victoria, Scott (Sue) Miller, Minneapolis.
Being the mother of 8 children, Ann spent many years at school functions, sporting events, and church related activities. She was a member of the Congregational Church of Christ where she was the superintendent of Cradle Roll and a Sunday school teacher. When the Congregational Church closed in April 2009, Ann joined Faith Lutheran Church. She was an active member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries as well as serving as a member of the Lutheran Home and Hospital Auxiliary. Ann’s children remember being encouraged to participate in extracurricular school and civic activities as well as receiving her help with their educational studies. In fact, she graciously took on many of their chores and tasks so that they would be free to participate.
Ann’s memory and passion for sending greeting cards to all her family on birthdays and holidays will be lovingly remembered by those who received them.
Ann especially enjoyed being with her 17 Grandchildren, Brenda, Lisa, Jason, Holly, Kelley, Christina, Joe, Tom, Jake, Nick, Tony, Mark, Jordan, Mike, Karyn, Hannah, and Dan. She had a special place in her heart for her 12 great grandchildren, Isaiah, Hayden, Zachery, Alexandra, Winter, Morgan, Isaac, Dane, Allison, Hunter, Kendall, and Reagan. Ann spent many patient hours playing Kings in the Corner, Crazy 8, and Go Fish creating fond memories of “Cards with Grandma” for the grandkids and great grandkids.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Loyd, 2 brothers, Oscar and Harry, 3 sisters, Alice, Margaret, Karen and sons-in-law, Lee Skallerud and Lee Barnes. Ann is survived by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and 2 sisters-in-law, Myrtle Anderson and Rita Bengtson. Blessed be her memory.
