Obituary for Betty Jean Roth

The Zahrbock Funeral Home of Madison, MN announces the death of 85 year old Betty (Mrs. Lauren) Roth of Madison who passed away Friday, October 27, 2017 at the Madison Hospital.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 4, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Madison. Rev. Steven Frank will officiate. The concluding service and burial will take place in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Madison.
The Roth family will receive friends Friday, November 3, 2017 afternoon and evening from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. There will be a public prayer service Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of the Zahrbock Funeral Home. Visitation will continue before services Saturday morning in the church.
Betty Jean Austin was born July 22, 1932 to parents Oscar and Jessie (Lee) Austin in Iron Mountain, Michigan. She was baptized on September 11, 1932, and shortly after moved with her parents and three older siblings to a farm in Roseau County, MN where she attended rural school for eight years. She was confirmed at English Lutheran Church in Roseau, MN, and sang in the Junior and Senior church choirs. Betty graduated from Roseau High School with the class of 1950. A very active student, Betty was in many school choirs, the school band, cheerleading, school plays, the Debating & Declamation Club, 4-H club, and many church activities. She continued her education at Concordia College where she sang in the Chapel Choir, then attended Moorhead State and graduated with an associates degree in 1952. Betty taught 5th grade in Fulda, MN for one year. She was united in marriage to Lauren Roth in 1953. While Lauren was in the Air Force, Betty taught at the Air Base School in Rapid City, SD. She and Lauren returned to Madison in 1954. To their union 6 children were born: Rebecca, Charles, Daniel, Rachel, John, and David. Betty was a lifelong learner, passionate about reading and education, and she continued her schooling at the University of Minnesota Morris receiving her Bachelors in Elementary Education at the age of 40. She found employment teaching at Madison Public Schools for many years. Betty loved music and shared her joy directing the Junior Choir at St. John’s Church in Madison from 1976-1987, also singing in the Church Choir, the Madison Community Choir, and at many weddings and funerals. She played the French Horn in the Madison Community Band and in musicals at the Prairie Arts Center. She had a sharp mind and enjoyed playing Bridge, golf and bowling until late in life. Betty showed great love and pride for her 11 grandchildren: Marissa, Laura, Dylan, Jonah, Anna Lea, Kyle, Allison, Aaron, Sam, Oliver, and Henry, as well as her 3 great-grandchildren Triston, Morgan, and Carter.
Betty peacefully went to be with the Lord on October 27, 2017 surrounded by her family. She had reached the age of 85 years, 3 months and 5 days.
Left to mourn her death are her husband Lauren of 64 years, her children; Rebecca (Russell) McDowell of Omaha, NE; Charles (Bev) Roth of Foley, MN, Daniel (JoAnn) Roth of Mantorville, MN, Rachel (Randy) Palmer of Mankato, MN, John (Julie) Roth of Miltona, MN and David Roth and his special friend Kari Heinzen of Madison. Betty is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Margaret (Peg) James of Walker, MN and Lois (Lavern) Nornes of Bloomington, MN, many numerous nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Oscar, her sister Corrine, her brother Kenny, and her nephews Jim and Jeff.
