Gerald Norman Engebretson was born on August 4, 1933 to parents Martin and Karen (Overvig) Engebretson in rural Marietta. He was baptized and confirmed at Augusta Lutheran Church in Marietta, Minnesota. Norman attended and graduated in 1951 from Marietta High School, Marietta, MN. He was drafted into the U.S. Army on July 17, 1956 and served as a clerk at Fort Chaffe, Arkansas until he was honorably discharged as a Specialist 2nd Class on April 16, 1958. He then served two years active duty and two years inactive duty in the National Guard.
On August 16, 1953, he was united in marriage to Betty (Tiny) Fritz at United Methodist Church in Gary, SD. To this union two children were born.
Norm farmed with brother, Stanley from the time he was 18 years old until they both retired. After his retirement, he worked for area farmers during the ‘busy seasons.’ Norm and Tiny moved off the farm in 1994 and into Marietta.
Norman was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Marietta, MN. There he served in multiple roles including deacon and church secretary creating the weekly church bulletin
He was a lifetime member and treasurer for many years for the American Legion Post 156 and was their ‘Mr. Fix-it Man!’
He was active in the Honor Guards of the American Legion 156 in Marietta MN, Vietnam Veterans 1054 in Watertown, SD, AMVETS in Appleton, MN, and the VFW in Milbank, SD. He participated in over 200 funerals over the last 7 years.
Norm was a lifetime member of the 40/8, a longtime member of the Marietta Fire Department and member of the Marietta Senior Citizens.
He had many hobbies including woodworking and clock making. He also enjoyed playing cards with the ‘old people’, word search puzzles, learning new technology from his daughter and grandkids – computer and IPad, and going on road trips with his ‘little buddy’ for ‘something to do!’
He never said ‘NO’ to fixing something that was brought to him or helping out a friend in need. He was always up for the challenge.
Family was the most important thing to Norm! His daughter and grandchildren were the light of his life and would do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING for them!
In his life time, Norman donated 18 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. What a tribute of
love for his fellow man.
Death came unexpectedly to Norman on July 5, 2018 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. He had reached the age of 84 years, 11 months and 1 day. Norman is survived by his wife of 65 years, Tiny and his daughter, Sara and Jeff Johnson and 2 grandchildren, Jacob and Katelyn Johnson of West Fargo, ND, sisters-in-law , brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his son Paul in 1966, his parents Martin and Karen, brothers Kenneth, Stanley, Bennie, Rector, Julius, sisters Juella Frantz, Judith Jackson, Gladys Zanke, Judith Engebretson (in infancy).
He is now in his heavenly home with Paul! Norm will be deeply missed by all who knew him!
