Obituary for Marcella V. Shigley

The Zahrbock Funeral Home of Madison announces the death of 100 year old Marcella Shigley of Minneapolis, formerly of Madison who passed away on Monday in Minneapolis. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 3, 2017 in Garfield Lutheran Church. Friends may greet the family on Friday before services in the church.
The concluding service and burial will take place in Garfield Cemetery.
Marcella V. Retrum was born on July 8, 1917 to parents John and Susie (Nordahl) Retrum on the family farm, Madison, Minnesota. She attended a one room school in which her sister Geneva was her teacher. Marcella was a true country girl, always wanting to be working in the field on the tractor, rather than being inside the house doing “ladies work.”
She attended Madison High School and graduated in 1935.
Marcella was united in marriage to Weldon Shigley on February 18, 1939 at Garfield Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born; Carol, Curtis, Mary, Margaret and Beth. The family resided in Madison where they raised their family.
Marcella worked at Unity Hospital in Fridley, Minnesota for 15 years. After her retirement (she wasn’t quite done working) she worked as a home-health aide throughout the Twin City area. She lived to help other people and her lifelong desire had been to be a nurse. We believe she’s a bit disappointed in all of us for not choosing this as our career paths.
In life, Marcella lived for her family, always planning something with someone and continuously giving of her time. Marcella loved to travel, not only in the U.S., but also to Norway, Denmark, Sweden, France, Belgium, England and Scotland.
While living in Augustana Health Care Center, she continued her ventures by attending all activities. She went to a Twins game, fishing on a pontoon, country drives and playing bingo.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She had many opportunities to have the side of the room with the window, but she chose the interior side of the room because she disliked birds so much! She said they reminded her of rats with wings.
Each time the family visited she excitedly put on her shoes, grabbed her purse and asked where we were going. She especially loved going to Perkins for potato pancakes and shopping for clothes at Kohl’s. Always a sense of adventure.
Marcella is survived by her two daughters; Margaret Derouen and Beth Underwood; seven grandchildren; Jody Moody, Dane Madson, Keith Derouen, Brandon Derouen, Rachel Witucki, Stephanie Beidel, Jeff Witucki; 14 great-grandchildren; Ashley Addison, Emma Addison, Savannah Doutt, Caleb Doutt, Evan Witucki, Connor Witucki, Thomas Derouen, Danielle Derouen, Jared Derouen, Brittany Johnson, Clayton Moody, Scott Moody, Avery Madson and Xavier Madson.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Susie Return, husband Weldon Shigley, son Curtis Paul, Daughter Carol Jean, grandsons, Doyle Madson and Mark Derouen, siblings Geneva Thompson, Hazel Hendrickson, Orville Retrum and many nieces and nephews.
Blessed be her memory.
