Obituary for Nancy Lee Moen

The Zahrbock Funeral Home announces the death of 78 year old Nancy Moen of rural Appleton, Minnesota who passed away on January 1, 2018 at her farm home.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday January 20, 2018 at Faith Lutheran Church, Madison, Minnesota.
On January 1, 2018, Nancy Lee (Howard) Moen died peacefully at her home outside Appleton, MN, surrounded by her children and minister. The sun was setting on the fields and prairies surrounding the farm she had shared for 52 years with her beloved husband Rolland, raised children (including foster children and foreign exchange students), taught music and welcomed friends and strangers alike with her vivacious spirit, tender heart, and endless love of life.

Nancy was born December 4, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois to Ervin Howard and Ruby (Howard) Beal. Her parents and sister JoAnn (Howard) Seuser returned to Appleton, MN where Nancy completed high school, graduating with the class of 1957, and soon met Rollie Moen who impressed her with his red and white 1957 Chevrolet and impressed her mother with his good manners. Nancy and Rollie were married at the Methodist Church in Appleton May 31, 1958 and had four children: Scott, Andrea, Reegan and Tekla. They purchased the old Robertson farm and house south of Marsh Lake and moved there in 1965, restoring and filling the majestic Victorian home with music, good food and excellent conversations.

Besides raising children and doing all the work that occurs with a large old home and farm, Nancy was always “on the go”: piano teacher for 42 years (teaching 100s of children at area schools and from her home), charter member and piano accompanist of the Chord-Ayres men’s chorus from 1969-2014, and member of Minnesota Valley Church. She volunteered with the church, participated in local theatre productions with husband Rollie, served on countless local committees and boards (including Lac Qui Parle County Historical Museum), and gathered with friends to prepare and enjoy food, participate in book club and Bible group. Nancy wrote columns for “The Appleton Press” and Madison’s “The Western Guard”. She enjoyed judging and playing piano, gardening (baking and canning), and loved all kinds of art—painting flowers even after an eye injury. Nancy and Rollie loved travel, visiting Argentina, Norway and many states and landmarks. In retirement, Rollie and Nancy wintered at Trophy Gardens in Alamo, Texas and relished new scenery and making new friends.

Nancy is survived by husband Rolland Moen, daughters Andrea Jones and Tekla (Dennis) Bottemiller, son Scott Moen, son Reegan (Jessica) Moen. Grandchildren Sarah Jones, Rachel Jones (Justin Belknap), Alison Owen (Trevor Owen), Mark Jones, Annika Moen, Kai Moen, Brandon Bottemiller, Alexander Moen. Great Grandchildren Kale Olson, Finn Belknap, Jaxton Owen. Sister JoAnn Seuser. Brother Brad Beal (Sherrie). Brothers and Sisters In-Law Roger and Doris Moen, Ron and Ruby Moen, Raye Nae and John Nylander. Aunt Marjorie Erickson. And many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Ervin Howard and Ruby (Hills Howard) Beal, father-in-law Bernie Beal, in-laws Selfred and Thorine Moen, numerous aunts and uncles.

Nancy was lovingly cared for by children Ann, Tekla and Scott who wish to extend their thanks to the Rice Memorial Hospice team, Pastor Kathleen Soldwisch, as well as the many friends and family members who supported Nancy with calls, visits, cards, flowers, music and prayers. As Nancy said in her own Facebook post recently: “All I have to do is think about our good times, and I smile and laugh!”

Nancy’s funeral will be held Saturday, January 20th at 10:30 am at Faith Lutheran Church in Madison, MN. A prayer service will be held 7 pm the previous evening, same location.

Memorials preferred to Minnesota Valley Lutheran Church, 3304 261st Ave., Louisburg, MN, 56256.
