Philip Stanley Nygard was born on April 1, 1925 to parents Peter and Sena (Trelstad) Nygard at their home in Hantho township. He was baptized and confirmed at Hegre Lutheran Church. He attended country school at District 29 and graduated from Appleton High School in 1942. Following graduation he farmed with his father, Peter and brother, Glenn.
He was united in marriage to Harriet Emde on August 7, 1948 at Shible Lutheran church. To this union five children were born: Gary, Marcia, Mark who died at three days of age, Maureen and Carolyn. Philip and Glenn continued to farm and raise registered Angus cattle, and in 1974 his son, Gary and Glenn's son, Paul joined the partnership becoming Nygard Brothers and Sons. In 1979 Philip and Gary became Northfork Angus and were later joined by grandsons Brock and Eric. His love of the land and cattle was undeniable. He always said that if you love what you do for a living, you'll never work a day in your life. He continued tilling the soil after retirement until he had to stay home to take care of Harriet. His dedication to his wife was a testament to many.
Philip was an active member of Hegre Church and later Borgund Lutheran Church. He served on the Madison Lutheran Home Board, was a member of the American Angus Association and Minnesota Angus Association and served as Hantho Township Clerk for many years. Over the years he enjoyed snowmobiling, dancing, bowling, hunting, fishing, playing cards, playing piano by ear and golfing in the Men's League and Duffer's League. He and his good friend, Ellsworth Olson traveled to many nursing homes playing piano and accordion. His Lowry organ gave him much enjoyment and peace in his later years. A man of many talents, he sang solos in Norwegian at Borgund and enjoyed drawing cartoon characters for his grandchildren and others. He was a kind, caring, honest, humble God-fearing man. He was hard-working and always optimistic with a smile on his face and a joke to be told. When asked how it was going, the usual reply was “borderline perfect”. He loved having his family around and was a wonderful role model for his children and grandchildren. Philip and Harriet enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Panama, South America and the Figi Islands. They spent the winters in Texas for 26 years.
Philip is survived by his four children, Gary (Carol) Nygard of Appleton, Marcia (John) Kells of Madison, Maureen (John) Hauck of Shoreview, Carolyn (David) Linde of Madison; 9 grandchildren: Mike (Kelly) Nygard, Brock (Patty) Nygard, Mitchell Kells, Jarred (Holly) Kells, Jake (Emily) Hauck, Sam (Jenni) Hauck, Melissa Hauck, Sarah (Dan) Rush, and Daniel (Jessi) Linde. Also 15 great-grandchildren; Philip and Kyra Nygard, Alexis, Eric and Brody Nygard, Alice and Isabelle Kells, Annika and Elsie Hauck, Noah Hauck, Robert and Andrew Rush, and Amelia, Oliver and Clara Linde; sisters-in-law Gladys Nygard and Verna Kojetin and brother-in-law Ervin Emde.
Philip was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Harriet, son, Mark (in infancy), grandson Eric Nygard; siblings Glenn Nygard, Myra Skurdahl and Sylvia Johnson.
Philip will be greatly missed by his loving family and many in the community.
Blessed be his memory.
